January 6 was an attempted coup. On January 6, 2021, a violent mob stormed the United States Capitol to stop the lawful certification of a presidential election. The attack followed months of deliberate lies about a stolen vote. Those lies were spread knowingly, repeatedly, and at scale by political figures who understood they were false. The objective was to disrupt the peaceful transfer of power and force an outcome that voters had rejected.
The attackers assaulted police officers, smashed windows, breached secured chambers, and searched the building for elected officials. Members of Congress were evacuated or barricaded themselves while the mob moved through hallways and offices. A gallows was erected outside the building. Chants calling for the execution of officials echoed inside the seat of government. Five people died in connection with the events of that day. More than 140 law enforcement officers were injured. The Capitol was damaged, ransacked, and used as a stage for intimidation and spectacle in service of overturning an election by force.
The falsehood driving the attack has been examined exhaustively and rejected by courts, audits, election officials from both parties, and federal investigators. No evidence has ever existed to support claims of widespread fraud capable of changing the election outcome. Assertions to the contrary rely on fabrication, misrepresentation, or outright deception. Responsibility extends beyond those who entered the building. It includes those who organized, financed, encouraged, and justified the effort, including Donald Trump, who summoned supporters to Washington, pressured officials to overturn results, and failed to intervene as violence unfolded.
This archive exists because facts are contested long after events end. The purpose here is record keeping, not reconciliation. The material collected on this page exists to remove ignorance as a defense. January 6 was an attack on constitutional order. Attempts to excuse it, minimize it, or rewrite it perpetuate the same failure that allowed it to happen. This occurred. The evidence is public. The consequences are real.
